It may evoke faraway climes but it is in Grasse, of course, that Ginger perpetuates the expertise of master candle makers.
Since the 17th century, the town has been considered the world’s perfume capital.
But before that, a long time before, leather had forged its reputation. Tanning processes were still rudimentary and produced bad smelling leather until the day someone had the idea of scenting it. This was the golden age of “Glove-makers and Perfumers” to whom we owe the discovery of the frangipane glove (scented with red jasmine flower extracts).
Little by little, the unpleasant odours of the Grasse tanneries were replaced by exquisite fragrances.
The expertise of Pays de Grasse perfumery is now listed by Unesco as intangible cultural heritage.
